I've Just Seen a Facebook

One of the great things about Facebook is that you can join groups dedicated to subjects close to your heart, full of like minded people.

Well, kind of. I decided to check out the groups dedicated Paul (the Marmite of pop) McCartney the other day and I'm afraid it's a bad world out there.

About 20% of the thousands of groups are dedicated to Macca being either brilliant or being terrible. Most of these were serious and the most serious was titled "I'll kill myself before Macca dies", or something to that effect. Hardly a great threat and how does it work? What happens if you find out he's really ill, kill yourself but then he makes a recovery? What
a waste. It was littered with comments by the saddest women in the Western world who actually want to marry the guy and they think they've got a chance too.

Then there were the groups dedicated to the "Paul is Dead" legend. Again many of these were serious, with people debating at length the 'evidence'. William Campbell would turn in his grave. Unfortunately there were some groups set up to balance the argument. The best one had this comment to add to the great debate: "I saw Paul in concert a few years ago, and I can confirm he's very much alive". Thank goodness it's all cleared up. Makes you wonder why the Paul is Dead Brigade keep their groups going.

Of course, there were lots of Lennon versus McCartney groups too. This will probably manifest itself via rival religions in thousands of years time. I can confidently predict that while they're busy arguing they'll miss the Elvis Preslyites sneaking up behind them with their "You've been a wonderful audience, thankya very much" bombs.

Thankfully there are some humourous groups - "Paul McCartney looks like my mum" stood out and there are a few groups for Macca lookalikes.

After a while I realised that I didn't quite fit in, again. I admit that on the evening in question I was drunk, depressed and lonely but thankfully not bad enough to actually join any of these groups.
